Dramatic moment mother drops her baby from a third story window as massive blaze burns down her Dallas home

This is the moment a mother dropped her baby to a bystander from a third story window as a huge fire burned down her home.

Five people were forced to jump out of a burning apartment complex in Dallas, Texas, to escape the fire on Wednesday.

It erupted at the apartment complex on Ferguson Road at around 7am and quickly spread, Fox 4 reports.

Byron Campbell said he spotted the flames shooting through the roof and ran to warn those on the third floor.

He said he saw others gathering mattresses to place below windows before those trapped in the building could jump.

And when Shuntara Thomas yelled and begged him to catch her infant, he hoped he wouldn't drop the baby – who he safely caught.

'I didn't want my daughter to lose her life,' Thomas later told KXAS.  'He told me: 'Just trust me. I got her, I got her.' So without even thinking, I just dropped her.'

But Campbell, 21, revealed he had been worried he would drop the baby.

'I went straight towards the window and saw a lady hanging her baby out of the window,' told Fox 4.

'After she dropped the baby, I hurried up and curled him up and caught him real good.

'And I hurried up and took him away from the fire and got him to the fire department lady.'

Thomas thanked him for saving her baby's life.

'Throwing my baby out to a complete stranger that I didn't know, but I do thank him because without him, my child's life would not have been saved,' she told Fox 4.

Dallas Fire-Rescue officials confirmed that six people, including the baby, exited the building through the third floor window.

Firefighters 'extinguished the fire on Ferguson Rd, but the real heroes did their work beforehand, as civilians and @DallasPD worked together to get residents to safety,' the fire department tweeted.

Two residents were taken to hospital for injuries that aren't life-threatening.

A firefighter were taken to hospital for treatment for burns to his shoulder and arm. He is expected to make a full recovery, officials said.

But the building's residents are now without a home after the structure was found to be so damaged that it has be torn down.
