THE TERRIBLE STORY OF THE 17 YEARS OLD WALERIAN WROBEL HIS TERRIBLE EXECUTION
Walerian Wróbel (1925–1942)
On April 19, 1942, Walerian Wróbel, a 17-year-old boy from Fałków in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, came to a farm run by a German widow in Lesum near Bremen.
On April 8, 1942, less than a week after his 17th birthday, he was arrested by the Germans and sent to the aforementioned farm. After only a week's stay, he made his first escape attempt. He was caught and returned to the German landlady. Three days later, on April 29, 1942, he made another more spectacular attempt to regain freedom. As a distraction, he set fire to the hay in the barn, which the German woman noticed right away. She reported this fact to the Gestapo, which interrogated the boy on May 2, 1942. He then testified:
"On April 29, in the afternoon, I set fire to the widow's shed so that I could leave this place of work. At that time, I did not think about the eight calves that would burn in the barn." He also admitted to stealing shoes and a bicycle inner tube.
The above events, seemingly not posing any threat to the Germans, had a tragic impact on the further fate of Walerian. On June 28, 1942, he was sent to the concentration camp in Neungamme, where he worked hard on the construction of a 600-meter tunnel.
On July 8, 1942, a German court sentenced him to death as a "pest of the German nation". The next day, the boy secretly wrote a farewell letter to his parents, to which he attached a self-made drawing of a horse's head.
The letter was smuggled out of prison and delivered to the parents. He was guillotined in Hamburg on August 25, 1942. In 250 places on the streets of Bremen, notices publicly informing about the execution of Wróbel were put up in order to intimidate.
