THE TERRIBLE EXECUTION OF SOLOMON MAHLANGU THE FREEDOM FIGHTER.

Today marks the 41st anniversary of the commemoration of the execution of 22 year old Umkhonto we Sizwe combatant and a fierce anti-apartheid activist  Solomon “Kalushi” Mahlangu, in recognition of his commitment to the struggle for liberation in South Africa and his unbreakable spirit.

Today also  marks 62 years since the Founding of the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) in 1959. The PAC was formed at Orlando Community Hall in Soweto.

An ardent Africanist Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe became its founding president, while Potlako Leballo became its secretary general.

The PAC was born following a dispute over the Freedom Charter. When the Charter was adopted in Kilptown in 1955, those who advocated for Pan-Africanism felt it was a betrayal of the struggle. The deepening of political differences broke out into the open in 1958 at the Transvaal provincial congress of the African National Congress (ANC).

Africanist members were excluded from the congress and they resolved to break away and formed the PAC. The party soon made history in South Africa when it organised the 1960 march against the imposition of the pass laws by the apartheid government

Biography:

Solomon Mahlangu was Born on July 10, 1956, and was the second son of Martha Mahlangu and originally from Mpumalanga, although, he grew up in Pretoria. His mother a domestic worker took sole responsibility for his upbringing.

Tried and convicted of two murders and three counts under the Terrorism Act, after being arrested in 1977 upon his return from Mozambique and Angola where he underwent training to assist in the student protests at the time. He was hanged on  this day 6 April in 1979.

Solomon Kalushi Mahlangu’s mother and brother,  not knowing what was happening were taken to see him during his trial in 1977... Solomon and his mother stood in silence looking at each other, and eventually Solomon asked his mother how the family was doing, she answered that they were all right, but after another period of silence she broke into a flood of tears.... Solomon then asked his mother..  "Why are you crying in front of these dogs,  I don’t care what they do to me. And if they spill my blood, maybe it will give birth to other Solomons"

Kalushi Mahlangu was hanged at the Pretoria Central Prison on 6 April 1979. The day of execution, observers believe was deliberately chosen to coincide with the 327thanniversary of Jan van Riebeck’s arrival at the Cape in 1652...

In apparent defiance of Prime Minister PW Botha, Mahlangu’s last message was inspirational... Before he was executed, Mahlangu said: "My blood will nourish the tree that will bear the fruits of freedom... Tell my people that I love them. They must continue the fight."
