 Powerful World War 2 Photos That Most People Haven’t Seen.


From Pearl Harbor to D-Day to the momentous events you may not know so well, these World War 2 photos bring history's worst cataclysm to life.

Both during and soon after World War 1, politicians and pundits began referring to the devastating conflict as "the war to end all wars."

One can hardly blame them for such a grandiose name. The West had never seen anything like World War 1 before. Between 1914 and 1918, approximately 17 million soldiers and civilians died while another 20 million lay seriously wounded.

Yet even this was not in fact "the war to end all wars." Just two decades later, most of the same countries waged war on much of the same ground. This time, however, the casualties were more than four times worse.


With combined civilian and military death toll estimates ranging as high as 85 million, World War 2 remains the single deadliest cataclysm in human history.

Between 1939 and 1945, the world endured not only its bloodiest and most far-reaching military campaigns, but also some of its deadliest famines, civilian exterminations, and epidemics. In Nazi concentration camps across Eastern Europe, those years saw the worst genocide ever on record.

Yet, today, the devastation of any one of these facets of World War 2 -- let alone all of them taken together -- is so vast that it becomes unfathomable.


As the famous quote widely misattributed to Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, one of World War 2's most important figures, goes: "One death is a tragedy; a million is a statistic."

Perhaps, however, the best way to attempt to drag World War 2's 85 million deaths out of the realm of statistics and back into the realm of tragedy is not with words, but images.


From the battlefields to the faces of the civilians who never set foot on one but whose lives were shattered all the same, the World War 2 photos above bring history's greatest catastrophe to life.

    I have never read anything more horrific than this. 😭 The photo below  shows Italian General Alexandro Luzano standing above a slaughtered Serbian child in front of a school in Prebilovci. The letter he sent to Mussolini after this crime has been preserved in the military archives: "Dear Duce, WATCH:  MAKE MONEY FROM CRYPTO 2024 My boundless devotion to you, I hope, entitles me to deviate in some way from strict military protocol.   Stoning is a form of execution by torture where the individual who throws the deadly stone cannot be identified. In some countries, those sentenced to stoning, or “lapidation” as it is also called, are buried in a hole and covered with soil (men up to their waists; women to a line above their breasts), according to Article 102 of the Islamic Penal Code.    Mata Hari was a Dutch woman who became famous as an exotic dancer during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She traveled throughout Europe, performing for wealthy clients. During World War I, Mata Hari's career came to an abrupt end when she was accused of spying for the Germans. The French authorities arrested her in February 1917 and charged her with espionage, and subsequently sentenced to death. The evidence against her was circumstantial, and many believe that she was unfairly targeted because of her reputation as a woman of loose morals.   The Bisbee Massacre:  Part Three The event forever known as the Bisbee Massacre took place on Main Street at the Castaneda and Goldwater Mercantile Emporium on December 8, 1883.    While it may not look like much, the Judas cradle is believed to have spelled a sickening end for the heretics who ended up on the wrong side of its razor-sharp tip during the Spanish Inquisition. 6 years ago 19 Yazidi women and girls were burned in Mosul Women and girls from Sinjar were kidnapped by ISIL during the genocide on 03.08.2014. They were humiliated, beaten and raped, bought and sold at the local market as if they were things.  After being sold again, the women refused EN masse to serve as ISIS sex slaves and were burned alive as punishment for their insubordination. A cage with Yazidi girls and women was set up in the middle of Mosul. Hundreds of people looked at the fate of the Yazidis and did nothing about it. THE TERRIBLE STORY AND EXECUTION OF THE THREE MURDERERS AT TYBURN "A DAY NEVER TO BE FORGOTTEN

 Three murderers at Tyburn In 1751 Parliament passed an Act “for better preventing the horrid crime of murder” which specified that a person convicted of murder was to be kept in chains and fed on only bread and water and to be hanged within 48 hours, unless that would have been a Sunday in which case the execution was carried out on the following Monday. This Act mandated the dissection or gibbeting of the murderer's body after execution.  The boy who vanished in the mountains, 1969 Dennis Lloyd Martin was a six-year-old boy who disappeared in the Smoky Mountains with his family on a yearly camping trip in June of 1969. The Martins met with family friends on the second day of their trip and made their way to Spence Field, a spot known for its good views.  Dennis, his brother William, and 2 children from the family they met on the second day decided to run ahead of the adults and hide in the woods around Spence field to scare the adults when they arrived.
