Captain Donald Cook arrived in Vietnam in November 1964 as an advisor to the South Vietnamese Marines. After only 18 days in country, Cook was wounded in the leg in a battle with the VC and passed out from blood loss. 


The VC took him prisoner while he was unconscious. Cook awoke to find himself in a primitive jungle camp with 10 other prisoners. 


He immediately established himself as the senior POW and took charge of the welfare of his fellow prisoners. He acted as the spokesman for the group, adhering so strictly to the Code of Conduct that for 3 years in captivity the VC never even learned he was a Marine, always assuming he was an Army officer. 


Cook learned the Vietnamese language in secret and used it against his captors, staying one step ahead of them. He fought for food and medicine for the POWs and even led failed escape attempts. 


Multiple times, he was forced to his knees with a gun to his head and threatened with execution. Despite the harsh conditions and treatment, he never broke to indoctrination or allowed his men to waver.

Cook remained classified as MIA for years without a trace until the VC finally released a report stating that he died in captivity from malaria in December 1967. 


He was 33 years old. His remains have still never been recovered. As his fellow prisoners were released and returned home, they brought with them the stories of his heroic leadership and courage.


 In May 1980, Cook was posthumously promoted to Colonel and awarded the Medal of Honor. He remains the only Marine in history to receive the award for actions while in captivity.

A man convicted of raping and murdering a 3-year-old girl was executed in Sanaa on Monday in front of hundreds of onlookers, the first public execution there since 2009. "Security was very tight, because authorities were fearing a revenge attack by armed men from the Bani Matar tribe to which the girl's family belong," said Reuters photographer Khaled Abdullah, who witnessed the scene. The police van transporting Muhammad al-Maghrabi, 41, to Sanaa's Tahrir Square was escorted by five police patrol vehicles.  The execution drew a large number of onlookers, some perched up telegraph poles and many watching from rooftops.
