The incident took place between 1am and 3am on Monday at Hosa Vantamuri village, around 9km away from the district headquarter.

BELAGAVI: In a horrific incident, a 42-year-old woman was stripped, paraded naked and later tied to an electric pole before being assaulted in a village in Karnataka's Belagavi after her son allegedly eloped with a girl from the same village.

The incident took place between 1am and 3am on Monday at Hosa Vantamuri village, around 9km away from the district headquarter.

Soon after receiving the information, Kakati police rushed to the spot and rescued the victim.

She was later admitted to KLE Hospital in Belagavi for treatment. According to hospital sources, the condition of the woman is said to be stable.

Meanwhile, police arrested seven accused within three hours of the crime and produced them before the court.

Karnataka home minister G Parameshwar, who visited the village, termed it an 'inhuman incident'.

He said the incident happened after Dundappa Gadkari (24), a farmer, and son of the victim eloped from the village with an 18-year-old girl at around 12.30am. Both of them belong to Nayak community. They were allegedly in a love affair for the past few months.

"After they eloped, around 12 to 15 members from the girl's family attacked the youth’s house. Later, they dragged the youth's mother and tortured her.

They stripped and paraded her on the village road. They then tied the victim to a pole and assaulted her. The police reached the spot, gave her clothes, and admitted her to the hospital," minister G Parameshwar said.

"Two KSRP platoons and other senior police officials have been deployed in the village. A case has been registered in Kakati police station," said city police commissioner SN Sidramappa.

Hosa Vantamuri falls in Yamakanmardi assembly constituency, which is represented by the public works minister Satish Jarkiholi.
