GERMAN ANTI - WAR POSTCARD DEPICTING A SKULL WEARING A PILOT'S HELMET AND GOGGLES WITH A GERMAN BANKNOTE....
German anti-war postcard depicting a skull wearing a pilot's helmet and goggles with a German banknote between his teeth, 1918.
.
In the top of the photograph is written "Fliegerzulage", roughly translated to "Pilot's bonus". In the bottom of the photograph (not pictured) is written "Memento Mori, Gedenke des Todes" - "Remember that you will die".
.
The message behind this satirical and dark anti-war postcard is that the life of a pilot is cheap, only worth a few bills, and bound to eventual certain death, which fits well with the very short life expectancy of First World War pilots.
.
Around 4,579 German pilots were killed in the First World War, of whom 1,962 were in accidents during training. Another 5,123 pilots were wounded and 1,372 were missing or taken prisoner.
